Bryon called for a rest, and Pappy cleared his throat, as he sometimes did before speaking. “Lys,” he said. “I think I’m going to take off now.”

Alyssa gaped at the clown’s face. He couldn’t be serious. “Now? I mean, we’re almost to Needlemount now.”

“Yeah, I know,” he said. “But you got this. The Yetas and their furry friends will be here to help y’all out… but your Granny Gert ain’t got nobody in her corner. I need to go.”

Lord Bryon stepped closer to the box, surprise on his face. “What did he say?”

Tears welled in Alyssa’s eyes and slid down her cheeks. She wiped at them with her sleeve and didn’t answer Bryon. “Pappy, are you sure?”

“Yes. Now, I told you. You can do more than you know, Lys. You know enough magik to keep yourself out of trouble. That illumination spell will be there for you to find that scarf and maybe other things you need. You can already heal hurts, seen and unseen, which is more than most healers can do. Try to tap into your powers if the need comes. I have faith in you, girl.”

She nodded, shoulders slumped in defeat, as she realized his intention had not reverted. The others glanced at one another, and they shouldered their gear as the reality of their part in her journey came forward for them all.

Alyssa fought down her emotions and said, “Go on, then. But you better come back here if there’s even a drop of trouble. Let Granny know I’m coming back, quick as a squirrel. And you let King Hubert know I’m working on this situation as fast as I can. Keep him from letting down his end of this bargain, Pappy.”

“I’ll find a way to keep everyone on task. Now give me a kiss and I’ll be off. You are going to be just fine, child.”

She gave the clown’s cheek a quick peck.

The toy box shook, and the clown’s face went down. Alyssa knew her grandfather had gone because the box felt different somehow. Lighter, even. Tears streaked her face, and she sat down hard, gripping the box.

Cerius patted her back in camaraderie, and Bryon paced a few feet away.

Fletch spoke soft words of encouragement to Alyssa who finally let him pull her to her feet. Soon, they all moved ahead once again.

True to the Yetis’ word, the pull in the muscles of their legs worsened as they approached another sharp incline. Here, trees were not simply winter-worn, they stood bent, withered, as if death had come upon them without warning. Alyssa studied them before being urged along. They had burnt bark on one side, and Alyssa feared the outcome if dryads had once inhabited them.

The snow drifted higher and became more difficult to trudge through. Alyssa lifted her feet higher to step into and out of the mounds. The trail, almost obliterated by the snow, turned unexpectedly and Lord Bryon fell a few feet down an embankment. Unhurt except for his pride, he posted a Yeti in front of the company after that.
